The Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championships, now in its 28th year, is a favourite event in Scotland’s culinary calendar, and punches way above its size in terms of media coverage.
I manage Hamlyns of Scotland’s long-standing sponsorship of the event, which extends to providing PR support for the competition, which attracts worldwide media attention due to its quirky nature.
In 2020 the competition was held in a virtual format for the first time due to Covid, and this is to continue for 2021. Instead of cooking live, competitors are invited to submit ‘speciality porridge’ recipes by video, with the winners being revealed in a day-long reveal on World Porridge Day – 10th October.
